A CT (or CAT) scan stands for computerised (axial) tomography scan. The scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed pictures of the inside of your body.

A CT scan is painless and usually takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on which part of your body is being scanned.

The preparation you need varies depending on what part of the body is being scanned i.e if it is your abdomen/tummy – you may be asked not to eat for six hours before the test. You may also be given an X-ray dye, 45 minutes before the procedure. This makes the intestines easier to see on the pictures. Sometimes a liquid X-ray dye is injected into the veins during the test. This also makes it easier to see the organs or blood vessels.
